Substance Use Counselor

Volunteers of America Delaware Valley is seeking a dedicated Substance Use Counselor to join our Behavioral Health & Reentry Services team. In this role, you’ll serve as a primary provider of clinical support for individuals working toward recovery and reintegration, delivering structured counseling services in a supportive, treatment-centered environment.

You’ll conduct assessments, develop recovery-focused service plans, and facilitate both individual and group sessions to help clients address addiction, manage risk factors, and access the tools they need to move forward.

What You’ll Do:

  • Complete client assessments using agency-approved tools to determine counseling needs and appropriate levels of care
  • Develop, implement, and revise client-centered, recovery-oriented service plans
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions and facilitate therapeutic groups
  • Link clients to internal and external support services and community resources
  • Monitor client progress, document outcomes, and maintain compliance with funding standards
  • Coordinate treatment across interdisciplinary teams and collaborate on discharge planning
  • Provide licensed counseling support to clients across multiple programs as needed
  • Participate in team meetings, in-service training, and quality assurance activities
  • Support client housing environment through participation in house meetings

What You Need:

  • NJ LCADC, CADC, or another licensed health professional qualified to provide alcohol and drug counseling
  • Experience working with substance use, behavioral challenges, and group dynamics
  • Solid understanding of social learning theory and cognitive-behavioral interventions preferred
  • Proficiency in client assessment, case planning, and documentation
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer skills and ability to manage caseload data effectively
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet agency driving standards
  • Ability to pass criminal background and drug screening
  • Bilingual fluency is a plus
